Stadt Langenthal | Bespoke Icons Design

Problem: The City of Langenthal was mid-development for a new municipality-wide website with a typical platform development agency popular in Switzerland. Based on standardised, template-driven functionality for areas covering from parking to recycling to social services to billing and rebates, visual cues and iconography options are limited.

Solution: on-IDLE developed an expansion of the city's 'house style' branding to encompass an entirely new iconography set catering for all municipal services that could be incorporated into, and works within the standardised website templates, in both portrait and landscape formats. On our recommendation, the iconography set was not only supplied for website-use, but also provided in outline, duo-tone with background colour, full tone colour and monochrome in square format so the icons can be used on other communication channels which include social media, signage and print.

Highlight: Marc Peter – our Creative Director – relished the opportunity to work with the new Head of Marcomms Stadt Langenthal again after a close relationship developed working together for years on multiple previous Publications' projects for Migros Aare.  What a pleasure it was working together again on a different challenge – dream team!

To make the icons future proof and usable across multiple channels, the available space was narrowed down to a square 300 × 300 pixels. All icons are individually hand-drawn and tested for fit against the available grid spacing.

Working within the boundaries of the existing brand identity colour palette, in-use colour guidelines were applied to the iconography set to ensure harmony to the website look-and-feel.

Individual icons are used as visual guides to help the user locate specific topics within deep-level content sections on the website, which are traditionally difficult to communicate – from registering for municipal services to sustainability projects in the city to premises' licensing to the rubbish collection calendar.
