Week 45: Paris' Adventures with The Oven

It's been a while, but hey! Here I am again with another article bursting full of captivating, fun to read stories straight out of the City that never ever sleeps (apart from the pubs, those guys still close their gates around 11pm). This episode’s «The Latest Greatest» will hopefully make you laugh so hard, that the tears of joy dropping on your keyboard will cause corrosion beneath those elegant white plastic letters. At least it will make you smile again, thinking of all this fun stuff, when you are cueing in the local Apple Store to buy a new keyboard.

The Latest Greatest

Halloween in Notting Hill
Coming from Switzerland, the gigantic hoo-ha about Halloween is something I did not know before I came to London. While in Switzerland, on the 31st some children do go out and trick or treat the neighbourhood and very few houses have carved pumpkin at the doorstep. Here in London they speak of the «Halloween Week», pumpkins are all over the place and obviously, every single little pub has it’s Halloween Special. The later one meaning that the «Station Court Friends» went out. We had a great night in a club in Notting Hill. Everybody was masked and there where dancers, fire-eaters and lots of drinks.

River Boat Cruise
Another highlight was the River Boat Cruise I was invited to by one of our customers, the City Swiss Club. It was an extraordinary experience and I am very grateful to have had this possibility. It’s much more impressive to see the city from the middle of the River Thames, than the River Bank.

My new project
My newest project is featured in this article’s banner image. I don’t want to spoil everything, since I planned to tell you more about it in one of my next articles. Some of you might recognise the things in the picture and find out what my project is. More about this shortly.

Taking The Server for a Walk
Last week our Server started making weird noises. First it was only for a short time, then it stopped making the noises again. By Thursday however, there was an instant, nerve wrecking noise coming from the power supply of the aged Dell Dimension. I decided to make it stop. So Markus and I started looking for the right replacement on the web. Since it would have taken at least one or two days to order the thing, we unhooked the box and removed the hard drives. Then I carried it down the road to the computer repair store. The Indians wanted to rip me off right away so I took the box back to the office. We hooked the thing up again and the noise was nearly gone. So whenever your computer starts making weird noises, simply take it for a walk around the block. It will be much quieter afterwards. Sadly this lasted only for a short time. As soon as the noise came back even worse, I took the tube to the next Maplin Electronics and bought a new power supply. Back in the office Markus and I built the new piece in. Our office has not been so quiet since a long time. In fact, we had to turn the radio back on because the silence was too much. Mission accomplished.

Paris' Adventures with The Oven

Lets stick with the nice «Alice in Wonderland» theme from the header.
But let me first supply you with the required foreknowledge. For the time of my internship here in London, I live in a student’s housing in South Tottenham. There’s a bunch of upsides to this, but also downsides. But then that is a whole different story by itself. One of the upsides however is, that theres a great number of fun, young students from all over the world living in the same place.

I have already made some very good friends with some of them. We hang out whenever possible and have dinner or go out together. Now there’s some very nice ladies in this crew. And I would like to tell you about one of them in particular. Lets call her Paris. Paris really is as beautiful as they come, blonde, bright blue eyes and all the other bits and bobs. Also she is one of the most fun and fine and lovely sweet little french girl I have ever met. But then Paris also has a bit of the simple hearted silliness that usually comes with this kind of girls. And that is where the story sets in.

Paris was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her flatmate on the sofa, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her flatmate was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, `and what is the use of a book,' thought Paris `without pictures or conversation?’

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the cold London day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making cupcakes would be worth the trouble of getting up and making the dough, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

Okay, here we have to leave Wonderland behind us, since Paris did not really come across a White Rabbit with pink eyes, but rather decided to experiment with the oven then making cupcakes. So Paris waited on the sofa patiently until her flatmate left the kitchen. Now she could finally start her experiment…

A couple of hours later this very image popped up in our «Station Court Friends» Whatsapp group chat. First I was not quite sure what to make of it. But then the others started finding out what was behind it. Obviously Paris' oven experiment turnt belly-up.

After a whole cacophony of questions, Paris' finally cleared up the mystery. And now Ladies and Gentlemen, hold on to your hats! She actually put a plastic bowl in the oven, jus to see what would happen. All of us others who where reading this explanation in the chat must have been rolling on the floor laughing. Here are some screenshots of the conversation – enjoy!

And be aware, this is only the first part of the story, my next article will feature more of Paris’ adventures.

That would be all for this episode. I hope you enjoyed reading the first part of Paris’ Adventures and that you'll be back for the next episode in about a week or two.

It would be great if you could share this blog and follow me on Twitter.
